Reflection in a Pool
First Encounter, Last Light
First Encounter, Last Light
While anchored in Provincetown Harbor, the Pilgrims struck out on shore in search of resources over the proceeding weeks. The first people the Pilgrims encountered were Nauset warriors near the mouth of the Herring River in Cape Cod Bay. The natives attacked the interlopers on sight leading to a short skirmish and eventual retreat by both parties. The aggression might have had something to do with the fact that the Pilgrims had spent those prior weeks stealing the native's food and seed that were stockpiled for winter, believing it to be divine providence of God that they should not starve, apparently with little regard to whether the Nauset tribe had food for the winter that they themselves grew.
This beach is now called First Encounter Beach and is a popular sunset spot in Cape Cod.
